Pictogram Library

Establishing guidelines and visuals

I developed the grid and design guidelines for the pictogram library and created 200+ industry-specific pictograms for use on the web, videos, presentations, and print collateral. These needed to be more detailed than standard icons but not detailed enough to be considered illustrations.

DIVERSITY IN THE DETAILS

When developing the pictograms representing individuals, I felt it was important to have small differences in the face shape, nose, mouth, eyes, eyebrows, and hair texture to  make them more human. An issue with icons or pictograms depicting individuals is that they often keep the same characteristics for the face, and rely on fill color to demonstrate diversity. The color palette for our pictograms is limited to two colors and can only appear on white backgrounds so we didn’t have color to rely on to display diversity.
